IMPRACTICAL ADULTS

Settling into uni and trying to adult.

I moved to Melbourne in 2017 for university when I was just 17 and all the new life changes was a LOT to cope with. As someone who was living alone for the very first time in a completely foreign country and  also as a first year in uni, there are quite a few things I wish someone had told me. So here goes, I hope this helps someone who’s going through a similar situation.

If you're planning to cook, skip the budget and invest in good kitchenware!

Kitchenware

Good pots and pans are SO important. I know, that sounds like the most mom thing ever but it’s so true. Getting a set of good cooking ware will save your life in the long term, so invest wisely.

I wish they had one-person portions for everything...

Groceries

Grocery shopping for one person is SO HARD. We need one person portioned loaves of bread.

Hack - I split my bread with my friend Kelly because we can’t finish it alone.  But honestly it’s still too much so hmu if you wanna be our 3rd bread person.

Any portion of veggies is too much for a person (veggies go so bad so fast). So always check expiry dates and buy in small portions when getting your groceries.

Every independent uni student ever: pesto pasta

Cooking

Cooking for one person everyday is so boring and useless. It’s so demotivating when you’re craving something but you literally only want one portion.

Hack - LEFTOVERS ARE KING.

Just make multiple portions and refrigerate to have later in the week.

Buy some colour run sheets to save loads!

Laundry

Student laundry is absurdly expensive but I have not yet found a solution for this (any advice gladly accepted).

Get you friends who'd pose like a TV poster

Friends

Orientation week at uni is so eventful and you will meet so many people but only 5% of them will actually stick around (that’s fine, they’re the ones that count

:P)

Discovery

University is so different from school on so many levels. The note taking process and listening to lectures takes a few weeks to adapt to. Non-academically, a university is much much larger and diverse than a school. I love this. You can spend time on yourself, discovering your likes and dislikes and find so many activities that align with your interest.

Moving to Melbourne has helped me grow so much as a person and I’m so glad I chose this city. The last year has taught me so much about myself and helped me grow and mature. University is definitely different and challenging but you’ll have some of the best years of your life, so buckle up and just hop on board!

Lots of love,

Nethmi
