UNI THINGS THAT HAD ME SHOOK

‘There’s a library with a sleeping room???’

University is a strange point in our lives; full of transition, confusion, stress but also heaps of fun. There’s been a few things about uni and uni student behaviour that made me take a double take…. so here’s a few. Enjoy!

Lining up at library doors

Students line up  at opening hours during exam period just to get a good seat in the library. And proceed to secure that spot throughout the day using various absurd yet advanced techniques (slow-clap-worthy). There are a wide range of extremes to these techniques from subtly placing your scarf or jacket on your chair to full on scattering your table with every book, paper and pencil you can find in order to secure that table for you and your friends!

Personally I don’t like studying at libraries but I definitely admire those deterministic souls that protect their chairs with their life (you’re doing great, sweetie!).

Petting zoo to help us destress

Uni students are balls of stress walking around like zombies during exam period and any heavy assessment period. So our uni somehow thought of petting zoos.

Every few months they would bring a whole mini zoo of cute fluffy animals onto the lawn so we can pet them and bask in their cuteness, forgetting all our worries. Sure this works, for like the 5 minutes we’re holding the animals! But not even those fluffy creatures can push back our deadlines or finals.

All the FREE stuff

It’s a known fact that uni students LOVE free stuff.Needless to say, many clubs and societies organise free giveaways throughout the year, ranging from free food, to exam packs and even tubs of Ben and Jerry’s. And hey I am NOT complaining! It feels great to get so much stuff for free but sometimes uni students go a little overboard with their need for free stuff. I recently volunteered at an exam pack giveaway and the line of people waiting for the packs went so far I couldn’t even see the end! So maybe uni students are just more patient with these stuff, patiently waiting in line for their turn while chilling with their friends and having a good time :)

Tip - Orientation week is the ULTIMATE haven of free stuff. From food to store discounts and uni merch O’ week is quite the event.

Mr. Stark, I don't feel too good...

Trying to maintain your WAM (average/GPA) is like trying to save Spiderman in the latest Avengers movie (please don’t bash me, it’s been a month you should know this by now). Uni grades are an accumulation of so many assignments and exams, even if you try your best you’re never really on top of things. There’s always some subject that will mess up your WAM and BAM, Thanos has snapped his fingers and Spidey’s down. At some point, you accept this reality and just hope and pray your WAM doesn’t slip too much (no good solution just do your best peeps I’ll pray for y'all <3).

Tip: go for easy breadths and electives to help your WAM, but try not to think of them as such. You’ll fall behind and it’ll end up doing the opposite.

A Room to Sleep

At Melbourne Uni, we have around 13 libraries: don’t worry I can’t name all of them (just like Metta can’t name 13 Reasons Why). But there’s only one library that I hold dear to my heart: the Rowden White Library at Union House. Let me tell you, I didn’t know about this library until much later and felt like I missed out on so much.

It’s essentially a haven for struggling uni students; there’s gaming PCs (yeah, for real), the comedy club (MUDCRABS) performs stand-up every Monday, you can borrow power banks, movies, and anything not related to your studies. It is strictly “No Studying Allowed”. The best part is that it has a separate room for watching movies, it’s quiet and you plug your headphones in for audio, but it’s mostly used as a room to sleep because it has THE MOST COMFORTABLE CHAIRS MY BUTT HAS EVER HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF SITTING ON.

On friendly terms with lecturers

So maybe this is a rare case and I’ve only actually encountered it once. I was doing a ‘ice-breaker’ with a group of ppl for a club event and one of the questions was ‘what are you doing differently this sem compared to the last sem?’. This one girl casually explained that she was now on much much friendlier terms with her lecturers and tutors. Proceeding to explain how they CASUALLY meet up for coffee!!!! Umm I was so shook I continued to stare at Metta with the biggest bamboozled eyes ever, and we both tried very very hard not to laugh. This girl was serious.

The variety of stuff that has shook me over the past year shows just how entertaining uni is! I hope you had as much fun reading this as we had writing it :)

Lots of love, Nethmi & Metta
