melbourne underrated treasure #1: sweet canteen

I will never forget the day my life was changed because of a cake shop. One day, Nethmi and I had just finished lunch with another friend of ours and were walking aimlessly. In the small alley near UGG Emporium, I spotted what looked to be a dessert shop called Sweet Canteen and we decided to try it out because a meal isn't a meal if it isn't followed by dessert. So we walked in, and ordered the strawberry shortcake - a customer favourite, according to the employee - and boy did our lives changed.

We were served lemon water and our desserts. The strawberry shortcake became Nethmi and I's favourite dessert ever since Nethmi isn't a fan of overly sweet things and the cream on this isn't too sweet. The cake was fluffy and melts in your mouth, unbelievably soft and spongy. The strawberries were huge (not surprising) and complements the rest of the cake very well. Since then, we've recommended it to everyone and I even brought my parents there when they were visiting. My mum loved it and she became obsessed with strawberry shortcakes, trying to find one that tasted as good as this but couldn't since the ones back home were too sweet. I can't tell you how many strawberry shortcakes we bought in the land of strawberry shortcakes Japan when we visited, yet still, Sweet Canteen remained undefeated.

Aside from the strawberry shortcake, the tiramisu tastes heavenly and the pistachio genoise is probably my favourite but it's hard to come by since it's seasonal. Basically, try everything on the menu 'cause you won't regret it. They also take custom cake orders and if you're looking for a whole cake order a few days in advance to get it cheaper! Price wise, it's more expensive than Brunetti but the portions make up for it (except maybe the tiramisu, which you can sometimes get on discount if you're lucky!).

Here's the address: Shop 3/8 Driver Lane, CBD

You can also get it now on Uber Eats!

Enjoy!
