melbourne underrated treasure #2: lavezzi

I get why most people wouldn't even notice Lavezzi. They're located just a minute or two walk from each other and Pidapipo has been around in the neighbourhood longer than Lavezzi. Pidapipo used to be my favourite too and I didn't think I needed to try other gelato outlets because Pidapipo was enough. Boy, was I wrong.

Lavezzi was introduced to me by Noah, who had a friend who was a regular. I was unconvinced at first but once I had a taste, I couldn't possibly go back to Pidapipo. Don't get me wrong, I still love Pidapipo and I still go from time to time for their rose-flavoured things, but it's a matter of preference and I like Lavezzi's gelato's mouthfeel a little more than I like Pidapipo's.

In terms of flavour, they're pretty much the same except Lavezzi is thicker and smoother. Selection wise, Lavezzi's flavour options are more standard and simple while Pidapipo's are more unique, though Lavezzi has a wider selection. Lavezzi is slightly more expensive than Pidapipo but the few cent difference is probably negligible.

Experiment with the two stores and see which one is your preferred gelato shop. Try both stores' pistachio flavour and compare the texture and flavour.

Metta's recommendation: rum and raisin, peanut butter nutella and pistachio.

Here's the address: 334 Lygon Street Carlton, Melbourne, Victoria Australia

Enjoy!

P.S. for even more unique flavours, head down the street to Il Dolce Freddo for durian, Bailey's and other unique ice creams!
