GYM RULES NO ONE TELLS YOU

Hiiii, it's been a WHILE since I wrote anything about gym. That doesn't mean I've been slacking off though! During my many trips to the gym, I have learnt quite a bit by observing other fellow gym go-ers. Here's a handful of lessons to enjoy. Hopefully they're relatable or at least teach you a little more about gym!

Sharing the mirror

Now this might not make any sense at first. To the newcomers: a lot of the free weight and barbell areas in the gym are in front of floor-length mirrors. These mirrors are not only used to inspect our sweat filled facial features and strained expressions; they're artfully placed to check our posture when carrying our various weight-related (or not) exercises. Therefore, it is very, very important to not block anyone's view in these mirrors. Find a corner of the mirror that's free and exercise away! Don't forget to sneak a glance or two at your hot workout neighbor!!

Wipe your equipment

The gym is a sweaty place, rightfully so, but it can get quite gross. It's completely okay if the equipment you use gets a little sweaty, but it is NOT okay to just leave them like that. Gyms have cleaning wipes in boxes or counters on the walls or the floor. You're expected to wipe the equipment with these once you are done using the equipment. This is the type of unspoken rule that is very important in the gym. Of course no one will flag you down, but proper etiquette is always good to keep!

Don't let your music interrupt my moment

There's always that person on a quiet bus with the booming headphones sending vibrations throughout the entire vessel. Basically having your music on wayy too loud. The gym might be a place to pump yourself up with exciting music and give you motivation, but it is also a place that people wind down at. Not everyone prefers loud music during their workouts. So it's always polite to listen to music at a decent volume and not disturb your fellow gym buddies. It'll also save your eardrums in the long run!

Hogging the equipment

Some gym machines do have seats but these aren't just for sitting around! I've seen many people sit at one machine for ages, checking their phone and talking to friends. This may be acceptable if you're between sets or it's not a very crowded gym. However, in most cases, it's better to find somewhere else to rest, and leave the machine open to other potential patrons. And don't forget to wipe it before you hop off! (Look at me utilizing the lessons already).

Be respectful, mind your own business and give people space

Finally please don't let these scare you. The gym is not an intimidating place and everyone is there to mind their own business and workout! Just be respectful of your peers and they will in turn do the same for you. And don't hesitate to ask someone if you're unsure about how the equipment works. Most people at the gym are enthusiastic about fitness and will have some experience with the equipment. They might even share a few pointers. Before you know it you'll have yourself a new gym buddy!

Lots of Love,

Nethmi
