LAKSAAA IN MELBOURNE

Now, I am a MASSIVE fan of laksa, I love it in the summer, the winter, for lunch, dinner…. you get the idea. To me, laksa is also a comfort food I look for when I am stressed or sad. Needless to say, I have scoped out quite a few laksa restaurants in Melbourne. So here are my reviews on the laksa at some of the most popular Malaysian/Singaporean restaurants for students in Melbourne.

Killiney Kopitiam

This is my absolute favorite. This place is like a warm hug on a sad day for me. Originating in Singapore in the 1910s, Killineys Kopitiam has established several branches in Melbourne. There are 2 outlets in the Melbourne CBD: one on Lygon St and one on Bourke St. (Personally I think the one on Lygon St is much better :P) Their seafood laksa and fish laksa are warm, steaming bowls of thick, aromatic, coconut-y goodness. The portions are quite big all for an affordable price of $10- 13.

Other recommendations: the black carrot cake, kaya toast and also the milo and teh tarik for drinks

Sambal Kampung

Another popular Malaysian joint with several stores in the CBD. This was where I had my very first laksa in Melbourne, so it has a soft spot in my heart. Their Elizabeth St. store, situated very close to Queen Victoria Market, has been the location of many friendly dinners and deep conversations. The seafood laksa here is very flavorful and they are also very generous with the seafood, fish cakes and fish balls. You can also pick your choice of noodles from hokkien, vermicelli and mixed (we always choose mixed). However, I would critique that their laksa soup is not as thick or coconut-y as the Lygon St. Killineys. The laksa ranges from $11.00-12.50.

Other recommendations: Har Mee, stir fried kangkong with garlic sauce

Nasi Lemak House

A popular stop for Unimelb students as it is located very close to main campus. As indicated by its name, this restaurant is more popular for its nasi lemak. And rightfully so. Their seafood laksa was lacking in terms of flavor and thickness, but it was quite delicious. Just not in my top ranks, compared to the other laksas. The prices are also more expensive, comparatively, ranging from $13.50-16.00.

Other recommendations: nasi lemak fried chicken
